The Big Picture – a collection of miniatures at Knysna Fine Art

Lionel Smit contributed a smaller work named, Untitled, - oil on linen and 20 x 27.5 to a collection of small works by contemporary South African artists exhibited at Knysna Fine Art Gallery from December 9 2022 through to January 9 2023. 

The gallery is located at Thesen House, 6 Long Street in Knysna, and is a well-known and respected venue for exhibitions of contemporary South African art, which the Lionel Smit Studio is proud to support.

The magnificent exhibition of smaller-scale two-dimensional works in a variety of media specifically included artists who usually work on a large scale. Superb technique and intriguing details characterised this diverse collection.

Along with Smit, other prominent participating artists included Angela Banks, Phillemon Hlungwani, Sasha Hartslief, Weyers du Toit, Jaco Roux, Thabang Lehobye, Andre Serfontein, Judy Woodborne, Aidon Westcott and Gary Stephens amongst others.

Lionel Smit

Lionel Smit is an international award-winning artist. One of South Africa’s most commercially successful multimedia artists, this prolific visionary is best known for his intriguing monumental portraits of women. The portraits capture visages in various cryptic guises and are executed on large-scale canvases and through bronze sculptures.

He established the Lionel Smit Studio as both a working and exhibition space in his hometown of Somerset West near Cape Town. Here he pursues his craft in all manner of media with areas dedicated to sculpture, painting, and printmaking.
