Lionel Smit and Laurie Wiid Furniture Collaboration: Premise Bench no.2

Lionel Smit has worked closely with one of Cape Town’s foremost luxury furniture designers, Laurie Wiid (Van Heerden), owner of Wiid Design, for over a decade. The two artists work in conversation to create signature pieces of sustainable furniture. Each work represents a one-of-a-kind piece of functional sculpture.

Their latest collaboration has resulted in a work titled, Premise Bench no.2 which can be viewed at the Lionel Smit Studio in Paardevlei Precinct. It is the seventh such collaboration between the two like-minded creators.

Wiid is a conceptual designer who loves to explore the notion of luxury, in its past and future terms. He established his studio in 2013, where he works with a wide variety of materials. When asked about his latest piece with Smit, he notes:

“Lionel’s new body of work is an exploration of process, combining various techniques which he experiments with in his studio. Through this process, he is challenging his ongoing fascination with notions of portraiture, figure studies, and human identity.“

Premise Bench no.2 is a one-off collectible bench fabricated from electro-galvanized and bent 5mm mild steel, and coated in a high-quality automotive paint finish. Where Premise Bench was hand-painted by Smit in bold egg yolk yellow and monochromatic tones, Premise Bench no. 2 is rendered in blues and monochromes.

The bench is finished with a durable automotive lacquer and assembled with polished (stainless) steel fittings and coated stainless steel legs.

Dimensions: 3010mm L x 400mm W x 450mm.
